Tangie: from idea to product, and beyond!

I am a redhead with sensitive skin. For as long as I can remember, I have had sensitivities to many store bought products. I’m not exactly sure when I began to realize that ingredients could be the problem, but I do know it didn’t take long before I began creating my own “recipes” for body and household products. It started easy with vinegar and water to clean my windows. Then body scrub and deodorants. Soon came a few containers with herbs and tomatoes. Somewhere along the line, I invited a worm composter into our home and well, that’s then it all went to sh**…or should I say “casting”?

Then I began reading & researching about petroleum-based ingredients. Knowing the skin is our largest organ, I knew I had top change my ways. Our skin actually weighs more than any single internal organ, accounting for about 15 percent of body weight. It also absorbs what goes on it, making it a mighty big sponge! I didn’t need a degree in rocket science to figure out that I was WEARING those PETRO-CHEMICALS EVERYDAY. Gross!

My first recipes were straight off the internet. You’ve probably seen it; the mix of Borax, Washing Soda and Fels Naptha soap. At that time, according to the internet; that was how to make “natural laundry soap”. I believed the internet for awhile. Then one day, I learned about REAL natural ingredients like soap nuts; which intrigued me. For 1,000’s of years, before I ever stepped foot on this amazing planet; these natural ingredients have been used to clean bodies and homes. So what happened? Did those ingredients go extinct? I needed to know more.

I watched several on history and ingredients. And the word INGREDIENTS – as I quickly realized – would include not only my body products, but  also my food choices. The big picture held lots I did not know about the manufacturing of food and other products. The more I learned, the more I realized how little I knew; about where and how the things in my daily life came. I was shocked and sometimes disgusted, but still very hopeful. Here are just a few documentaries that opened my eyes to making small changes:

I had to rework my laundry formulation after learning all this new information. It felt good putting the ancient cleaning ingredients to use. I formulated and husband washed load after load after load after load….testing and retesting my new formulas. When finally, I did it…no more borax or washing soda…or Fels Naptha! The new formula emerged from the washing machine like a Phoenix rising from the ashes — ok, so maybe it was more like a clean shirt emerging from the dryer. Either way, it had emerged and it was here to stay!

I am extremely proud of my efforts to get a liquid laundry soap into a concentrated paste form. There is nothing like it on the market. No excess water weight, no excessive plastic containers to throw away each month. The effectiveness and affordability is awesome; which also applies to our Stain Remover Bar and Shave Cream Soap.

My company’s mission is expressive of how I try to live my life everyday….”doing more with less, because it’s the right thing to do.”  I would love for you to join me on this mission.
